When Is It Time to Replace Your HVAC System?

Your heating and cooling system works hard to keep your home comfortable year-round, but like any equipment, it won’t last forever. Knowing when to replace your HVAC system—or when a simple upgrade could improve performance—can save you money, energy, and frustration in the long run.

Here are some of the most common signs it may be time to call a professional contractor and consider a replacement:

1. Your system is getting old

  • Heat pumps or air conditioners over 10 years old should be evaluated for replacement. Upgrading to an ENERGY STAR® certified unit can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs when properly installed.

  • Furnaces over 15 years old may need replacing. An ENERGY STAR® furnace is about 15% more efficient than standard models.

  • If you have a boiler, ENERGY STAR® certified options are about 5% more efficient than new, non-certified models.

2. Frequent repairs and rising energy bills

If you find yourself calling for repairs more often—and your utility bills keep climbing—it could mean your system is losing efficiency.

3. Uneven temperatures

Some rooms that are too hot or too cold may point to duct issues, poor insulation, or equipment that’s no longer running properly.

4. No programmable thermostat

If your home sits empty for long periods and you don’t have a programmable thermostat, you’re likely wasting energy. Installing one can help you start saving right away.

5. Humidity problems

Dry air in the winter or sticky air in the summer often signals leaky ducts or failing equipment.

6. Too much dust

Leaky ducts can pull dust, dirt, and particles from attics, crawl spaces, or basements, then spread them throughout your home. Sealing your ducts may help.

7. Strange noises

A system that is loud or noisy may have issues with the ductwork or the indoor coil.

8. Poor home energy score

If your Home Energy Yardstick score is below 5, your household uses more energy than average—which means higher bills and less comfort.

Bottom Line

Replacing your HVAC system is a big decision, but waiting too long can cost you in repairs, higher energy bills, and comfort. Choosing a system with the ENERGY STAR® label ensures better efficiency, lower utility costs, and a more comfortable home.
